Everything made before 2022 is low background culture. And the supply is closed.

On 21 June 1919, a German rear admiral named Ludwig von Reuter waited until the British fleet had sailed out on exercises, and then gave the order to scuttle his own ships rather than hand them to the victors of a war already lost. Seventy-four warships sat interned at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands. Reuter gave the word, and fifty-two of them drowned themselves in the cold, leaden sea. At the time it looked like a petty gesture of defiance.

It turned out to be a gift to the future.

16 July 1945. The Trinity test seeded the atmosphere with radionuclides, and from that moment every ton of steel smelted on Earth carried a faint signature of fallout. Steelmaking draws in vast quantities of air, and the air was no longer clean. For the most sensitive instruments, Geiger counters and the detectors inside medical scanners, that trace was enough to make new steel useless. Engineers needed metal forged before the bomb. They called it low-background steel: not purer, not better, simply made before. One of the great sources of it was the German fleet at Scapa Flow, raised from the seabed and sold off across the century that followed.

The internet had its own Trinity test in 2022, when the machines began to write back. Everything humans have made since, every sentence, image and record, is now presumed to be contaminated, and the presumption will never be lifted. Everything made before 2022 is low background culture. And the supply is closed.

There is one difference between the two. The nuclear age got the survivable version. The atmosphere heals. Cobalt-60 halves every five years and steel clean enough for almost any purpose can now be made to order. Ours is permanent. Everything made now is copied forward, trained on and copied again. Every copy carries the contamination into the next.

This is an investigation of two questions. What survives from before and what it will be worth. And whether anything clean can still be made, deliberately, by keeping it out of the air.

The record

  1. 01  ·  Running The experiment: five words in Manhattan

A single sentence placed one word at a time in public places, with no copy of it held anywhere. It cannot be scraped, retrieved or sent. It can only be walked. Pre-registered, with dates.

  2. 02  ·  Preliminary The Foundry

The creation and certification of new, low background, authentic human writing. A physical place for writing under witnessed conditions, and a body that certifies those conditions. A sketch, published unfinished.
